Under reverse engineering is defined the recovery of the source code from the binary code of an executable program or a program library. Here, preferably disassembler or decompiler can be used.
In the case of a decompiler the Source Code is recovered as far as possible automatically from the binary code. If this is not possible with the help of a disassembler can also be determined machine code manually analyzed.
From the source code or the machine code it is now possible to analyze the exact behavior and thus potential vulnerabilities of the software.
Usage:
- Analysis of malware
- When grown systems there are often programs for which there is no source
- Programs must be analyzed in order to understand and, where appropriate, to fix errors
